Study acting 2, build your career

It is possible to have a long career without having taken as much as a single acting lesson. Many stars have accomplished this task. On the other hand, very few genuinely great actors can make this claim. While raw talent is definitely important, even the greatest natural actor can benefit from acting lessons, if only by improving their mechanics. The important thing to remember about acting classes is that they probably can't make you a great actor if you don't already have some natural born talent, but acting classes can help you develop the craft to make you better.

One good way to begin an acting career is to join in the productions at your local theater. They are often run by people who have friends and relatives in the business. If you are very young, being in school plays and musicals will help. Later in high school you can take drama class and also do musicals and other things of that nature. If you are in your 20-30's you need acting classes and an agent. And neither one are cheap, but you have to have them. Also a portfolio of yourself taken by a good photographer if you want to do any serious work wouldn't hurt. From there you can branch out with a lot of good leads. You can learn to act wherever you see excellent acting happening, in a class, in a play, with a teacher. Don't just go to a school you know nothing about, since it may have no resources to get you what you need.Learning to act is one thing. There is acting for the stage and acting for film, two different processes, not to be confused. If you've only acted for the stage, it helps to have a class in acting for film. Acting for film is more like "being", it happens as much with the eyes as anything else, and that's way to simple a way to explain it.

Learning to act as a business is a whole different animal.

Acting lessons are available in many places, including baccalaureate universities, dedicated acting schools and even private acting coaches. Although many acting schools like the Actor's Studio and Julliard have impressive reputations, it is absolutely possible to receive high quality training from a regular university or even a private teacher as long as you check his qualifications.

It's important to know that lessons are extremely important, as any artist has to train and sculpt their craft. A lot of schools let you audit, sit in a class for free and watch. If you can, try a few of those or interview with the different schools and ask a lot of questions. Get involved and work at it as much as possible.

Lessons wont "make" talent. Talent is like a muscle; either it's there or it isnt, but if it is there, you gotta work at it and make it stronger. Lessons could help this, and lessons are good at confidence building, however, lessons will NOT 'make' an actor.Half of the people who claim to "want to help you" out there are just con men and are after your cash. Fine, go get some lessons, but stay alert and keep your cash close.

The cost of acting lessons varies widely. Chasing a college degree in theater arts means paying for all those other classes necessary to achieve that degree, but you get the benefit of a more expansive learning environment. The Julliard School currently has a yearly tuition that is nearing $30,000 a year, but you receive all the benefits of that school's extraordinary reputation. Consult community classes and private acting schools to get an estimate of cost.
