Succesful in acting ?

If you want to be succesful in acting there is a lot to consider. Many think of acting as an easy job but in fact there is a lot more to it than meets the eye. One of the hardest things about being an actor is having the talent and skill to paradoxically act natural, even though you are pretending to be someone else. Here are some tips that budding actors should take into consideration if they want to be successful. Apply these to what you already know and any difficulties you have should be made easier.

Know your character inside out.

It is essential to have a basic idea of your character pre-history. Go beyond the immediate and find out about your character, find out what led them to this point in time (when you will be playing them). Go beyond your character and look at the others in the production too, try and understand the relationships they have with your character that are outside the script. It is also a good idea to have a clear understanding of the story, take your ideas beyond your lines and the script. Knowing and understanding will make you more succesful in acting.

Create a believable world

Don’t focus on just telling the story and leaving the rest to the other actors or the audience. Do your best to create a truly believable world. Use subtle but powerful emotions while acting, do not strive to exploit these either as it tends to remove you from the character. Learn your lines so that they become a part of you. Just because you learn your lines does not mean you should avoid listening to what the other characters are saying either. You should be interacting with the other actors instead of just waiting for the time when you read your lines. That is when you will be succesful in acting.

Learn and understand your lines

The reason you learn and understand your lines is so that you are able to forget them. That means that you stop seeing them as lines and they become a part of you. Instead of being a machine that just spouts well rehearsed lines back at whoever requires them, you should be able to listen to the other actors and feel their emotions when they deliver their lines. Likewise, you should be able to deliver lines that feel real and true to the character you are playing. Make a habit of learning and being able to identify the impulses that drive your character. What makes them tick? What do they like? You should be able to put yourself in the shoes of your character and feel comfortable playing them. Try thinking about what your character would do in different situations. Understand the space around your performance and also try to understand the nature of your character. Being succesful in acting also means being able to forget the lines after you've learned them.

Use your whole body.

If you are performing on stage, you should always remember that you are being watched from different angles so act with your whole body. Project your voice and your physical actions to every seat in the house. Try and make everyone feel the emotions of your character while delivering your lines. Do not rush through your performance; this can lead to mistakes and slip-ups. You should be able to experience every second you are on stage and enjoy every moment, this will undoubtedly lead to a better performance. To become succesful in acting you have to know your physical value.

Trust the people around you.

You should also be able to trust the director and your other members of cast. Once you allow yourself to fully trust them, you will be able to relax and settle into your character. You won’t have to worry about their performances and how this will affect you, giving you time to focus on your performance and delivering your lines to the best of your ability.

If you use these tips you really have a better chance at getting succesful in acting. You will be noticed!
